Main Entrance Vastu: The 32 Padas, Auspicious Doors & Threshold Rules

In Vastu Shastra, the main entrance (Mahadwara) is considered the energetic mouth of the dwelling. It is the primary threshold through which cosmic Prana, opportunities, social connections, and financial prosperity enter the household.

समझें

An entrance functions as a pressure valve and electromagnetic receptor. The direction and exact perimeter location dictate the quality of incoming sunlight, atmospheric air currents, and dust/wind dynamics. A well-lit, proportioned doorway welcomes positive human psychology and smooth energetic transitions from the outer chaotic world to the inner private sanctuary.

शास्त्रीय नियम

The 32 padas system

The exterior perimeter of any rectangular dwelling is mathematically divided into 32 equal gate divisions (8 padas on each of the four cardinal sides). Not all East-facing or North-facing doors are beneficial, and not all South-facing doors are detrimental. Specific Padas determine the exact outcome.

Auspicious padas table

Direction East (Purva)

  • E1 (Shikhi - fire hazards)
  • E2 (Parjanya - excess expenditure)
  • E8 (Diti - financial instability)

Direction North (Uttar)

  • N1 (Roga - chronic disease)
  • N2 (Naga - deceit and rivalry)
  • N8 (Diti - spiritual delusion)

Direction South (Dakshin)

  • S1 (Anila - anger issues)
  • S5 (Yama - chronic debts)
  • S8 (Bhrigraj - waste of resources)

Direction West (Pashchim)

  • W1 (Roga - chronic health drain)
  • W6 (Shosha - financial dry spells)
  • W8 (Vayu - instability)

Threshold dehleez mandate

A traditional raised threshold (Dehleez) constructed of seasoned wood, marble, or granite is mandatory. It acts as an energetic dam preventing positive household energy from leaking out and blocking negative low-frequency atmospheric dust from entering.

Foyer and shoe rack rules

Shoe racks and clutter must never sit directly in front of or immediately adjacent to the main threshold. Keep shoes confined to an enclosed cabinet in the West or South. The entrance foyer must be bright, clean, and free of squeaking door hinges.

सामान्य प्रश्न

Is a South-facing house always inauspicious or unlucky?

A Widespread Misconception

Ancient Shastras never condemn South-facing homes universally. When the main entrance is positioned precisely in Pada S3 (Vitatha) or Pada S4 (Gruhakshata), it produces extraordinary fame, wealth, high administrative positions, and commercial dominance (often seen in the homes of leading industrialists, defense leaders, and politicians). Problems only arise when the door is in negative padas like S1 or S5.

If a South door is situated in a negative pada, install a 3mm copper strip or brass threshold plate flush into the floor across the doorway.

Can a mirror be placed facing the main entrance door?

Strictly Prohibited

Placing a mirror directly opposite the open front door reflects all incoming Prana and positive environmental energy right back out of the house, resulting in missed opportunities and financial stagnation.

Move the mirror to an adjacent wall (facing East or North) so it reflects internal abundance instead of the exterior doorway.

What should be placed above the main door for protection?

Sacred Symbols of Metal and Wood

Affixing a brass or copper Swastika, Om, or Trishul above the lintel blesses incoming energy. An auspicious nameplate made of seasoned teak wood or brass elevates domestic prestige.

Ensure the entrance is brightly illuminated with warm golden light (2700K-3000K).

अहिंसक उपाय

Elemental Metal Threshold Strips

Embed a 3mm metal strip across the floor directly beneath the door leaf to energetically isolate a flawed pada: Brass for South/Southwest, Copper for Southeast, Stainless Steel for North/East, Aluminum for Northwest.

Vastu Pyramid Installation

Install a set of three brass or copper Vastu pyramids above the door frame to purify incoming vibrational energy.

Color Tone Lintel Rectification

Paint the door frame or apply a thin color tape matching the friendly element of the directional zone (e.g., warm yellow/cream for South/West; green/white for North/East).
