According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva revealed this sacred vow to Goddess Parvati, citing the devotion of Charumati—a pious woman who lived in the kingdom of Vidarbha. Pleased by her devotion to family and elders, Lakshmi appeared in a dream, instructing her to perform this puja, which blessed her community with prosperity.

रीति-रिवाज
- Cleaning homes and creating elaborate rice-powder Kolams on front verandas
- Dressing a sacred brass or silver Kalash with a silk sari, mango leaves, and a coconut wrapped in turmeric to form the body of the Goddess
- Fixing an ornamental silver or gold face of Devi Lakshmi (Amman Mugam) onto the coconut
