Skanda Sashti is a potent six-day festival dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), commemorating his defeat of the demon Surapadman using his divine spear, the Vel. Through strict fasting and reciting the Kanda Sashti Kavasam, devotees pray for the eradication of internal negativities.

Born from the third eye sparks of Lord Shiva to restore universal balance, Lord Murugan received the invincible spear (Vel) from Mother Parvati. On the sixth day of the battle at Tiruchendur, he struck down the shape-shifting demon Surapadman; instead of destroying him, Murugan split him in two, transforming him into a peacock to serve as his mount and a rooster to adorn his banner.
The transmutation of base ego into devotional service, where divine wisdom (Jnana Vel) pierces mental ignorance.
रीति-रिवाज
- Commencing a six-day austere fast consisting solely of liquids or simple fruits
- Decorating the home altar with miniature brass spears (Vels) anointed with sandalwood and red vermilion
- Setting up daily group chanting of the defensive hymn Kanda Sashti Kavasam
Devotees perform Abhishekam on the Vel using milk, rose water, vibhuti (sacred ash), and panchamrita. On the final evening, communities assemble to witness the dramatic enactment of Soorasamharam.
