Pongal · उत्तरायण (Uttarayan) · Maghi · Khichdi Parv
Makar Sankranti celebrates the Sun God's transition into the sign of Capricorn (Makara Rashi) and the onset of Uttarayan, the sun's northward celestial journey. It is observed through community river dips, flying colorful kites, and offering sweet sesame and jaggery confections.
देवता: Lord Surya Bhagavan, Goddess Sankranti
Puranic traditions recall this as the day Lord Surya visits his son Shani (Saturn), ruler of Capricorn, setting aside past differences to embody harmony and reconciliation. In the Mahabharata, the venerable warrior-patriarch Bhishma chose the sacred advent of Uttarayan to consciously leave his mortal body on his bed of arrows.
Harmony, gratitude toward the solar source of life, burying past grievances, and aligning human rhythm with cosmic solstices.
Devotees take an early morning holy dip (Snan) at sacred river confluences such as Prayagraj or Gangasagar. Arghya is offered to the Sun God, followed by ritual donations of sesame seeds, blankets, and khichdi to the underprivileged.

Uttarayan Kite Festival
Entire communities spend the day on rooftops flying millions of paper kites, shouting 'Kai Po Che!', followed by feasts of spicy Undhiyu and jalebi.
In Maharashtra the phrase 'Til-gud ghya, god-god bola' reminds people to speak sweet words and let go of past friction; scientifically, sesame and jaggery provide nourishing, warming fats during cold winter weather.
Unlike most Hindu festivals which follow the lunar calendar (tithis), Makar Sankranti is based on the sidereal solar transit into the constellation of Capricorn.
