महत्त्व

Vijayadashami marks the tenth day concluding Navratri, commemorating Lord Rama's decisive victory over the demon king Ravana and Goddess Durga's triumph over Mahishasura. It is celebrated with the burning of towering effigies, the blessing of tools and books, and starting new educational ventures.

After worshipping Devi Chandi to receive divine blessings, Lord Rama struck down Ravana with the Brahmastra arrow on this day, liberating Sita and establishing Dharma. In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas completed their year of incognito exile and retrieved their divine celestial weapons hidden within the sacred Shami tree.

Righteousness (Dharma) inevitably prevails over arrogance, injustice, and unchecked sensory ego.

रीति-रिवाज

  • Cleaning and decorating vehicles, mechanical tools, laptops, and books with chandan and marigold garlands
  • Constructing large bamboo and paper effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnada
  • Gathering leaves from the sacred Shami tree (Apta/Bauhinia racemosa) to exchange as symbolic 'gold'

Performing Ayudha Puja (worship of tools of trade and livelihood) and Shami Puja. People exchange Shami leaves wishing each other boundless prosperity, while children initiate their formal learning on this day through Vidyarambham ceremonies.
