Traditional timing rule

Observed on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) of both Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and Krishna Paksha (waning moon) every month.

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Maintain celibacy and mental peace.
  • Engage in charity, prayer, and chanting Vishnu mantras (e.g., Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya).
  • Consume fruits, milk, or fasting flours like singhara/kuttu if not doing a full waterless fast.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Do not consume any grains, beans, or legumes.
  • Avoid table salt, onions, garlic, and non-vegetarian food.
  • Avoid sleeping during the day and getting angry or speaking harshly.

Completion and reflection

Successfully completed by breaking the fast (Parana) on the 12th day (Dwadashi) within the specified morning window, after offering prayers and charity, and ensuring no grains were ingested during the 24-hour Ekadashi tithi.
