Observed every Monday, with special prominence during the holy month of Shravan (July/August).

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Observe a partial fast, consuming fruits, milk, or a single salt-free meal (*Nakta*) at sunset.
  • Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra or Om Namah Shivaya.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Avoid eating heavy grains, table salt, or non-vegetarian foods during the fasting hours.
  • Avoid anger, ego, and negative thoughts throughout the day.
  • Do not consume food before performing evening prayers/sunset rituals.

Completion and reflection

Validated by performing the Monday evening ritual prayer, offering prayers to Lord Shiva, and breaking the fast thereafter with light sattvic food.
