Tanah Lot Temple

Dewi Baruna (Sea God) & Dang Hyang Nirartha (Shiva Avatar aspect)

Spiritual philosophy

Built in the 16th century by the Hindu sage Dang Hyang Nirartha. Part of Bali's cardinal sea temples (*Pura Segara*) designed to spiritually protect the island from ocean-borne negative energies and honor the cosmic balance between sea and land.

Architecture & structure

Balinese Offshore Sea Rock Architecture

Perched on a massive offshore rock formation continuously carved by ocean waves over centuries. During high tide, the sea completely surrounds the temple island, making it accessible on foot only during low tide. Features multi-tiered thatched wooden Meru towers and a freshwater spring flowing at the base of the saltwater rock.
