Nachiketa and Yama

Characters: Nachiketa, Lord Yama (God of Death)

Young Nachiketa was a remarkably thoughtful boy who noticed his father performing a ritual sacrifice by giving away old, tired cows that could no longer give milk. Feeling troubled by this half-hearted charity, brave little Nachiketa gently asked his father, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' Annoyed by the persistent question, his father snapped, 'I give you to Yama, the Lord of Death!' Instead of crying or running away, Nachiketa took his father's words seriously and bravely traveled to the gates of the underworld. When he arrived, Lord Yama was away, so the courageous boy waited patiently without food or water for three whole days. Impressed by his poise, Yama offered him three magical boons. Instead of asking for gold, power, or endless luxury, wise Nachiketa asked for the ultimate secret: 'What happens to a human soul after death? Does life completely end, or is there an eternal truth?' Deeply moved, Lord Yama sat down and taught the young boy the profound secrets of the universe, courage, and inner peace.
