Traditional timing rule

Observed every Friday for 16 consecutive weeks to fulfill wishes and invite contentment.

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Observe a strict weekly fast for 16 consecutive Fridays.
  • Partake in a sweet meal (consisting of jaggery and roasted chickpeas) only after evening prayers.
  • Read or listen to the 16-Friday Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha with family or neighbors.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Strictly avoid any sour foods (such as lemons, tamarind, yogurt, or citrus fruits) throughout the day and in offerings.
  • Do not let anyone in the household consume sour food if possible on the day of the fast.
  • Avoid anger, dishonesty, and harsh behavior during the 16-week observance.

Completion and reflection

Validated by successfully completing all 16 consecutive Fridays, followed by the concluding Udyapan ritual involving feeding young boys (*Udyapan bhojan*).
