Traditional timing rule

Observed on the ninth day (Navami) of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March/April).

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Observe daytime fasting from grains, consuming fruits, milk, or a light sattvic meal after noon prayers.
  • Recount passages from the Ramayana or chant sacred names (e.g., Ram Naam).
  • Engage in charity and feed the needy or young children (*Kanya Pujan*).

Restraint and alternatives

  • Avoid eating grains or heavy meals during the daylight hours before the birth celebration.
  • Avoid untruthfulness, harsh speech, or anger throughout the day.
  • Do not consume non-vegetarian items, onions, or garlic.

Completion and reflection

Validated by completing the daytime fast, performing midday prayers at 12:00 PM (the birth hour of Lord Rama), and breaking the fast thereafter.
