Reflects the Javanese Hindu synthesis of the Trimurti, honoring Shiva as Mahadeva (The Supreme God), Vishnu as the Sustainer, and Brahma as the Creator. Represents the cosmic mountain structure and the triumph of Sanatana Dharma during the Sanjaya Dynasty.

Classical Javanese Hindu Temple Architecture

A UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 9th century. Features a central yard with 8 main shrines and 224 surrounding individual shrines (Pervara). The central Shiva shrine towers at 47 meters (154 ft), containing statues of Shiva, Agastya, Ganesha, and Durga Mahishasuramardini. Inner gallery walls showcase continuous relief carvings of the Ramayana epic.

Admiring the soaring 47-meter central Shiva temple, examining the detailed Ramayana bas-reliefs carved around the inner balustrades, viewing the ancient Durga Mahishasuramardini idol inside the Shiva temple, and watching the open-air Ramayana Ballet performance at night.

Dress code & guidelines

Modest clothing required. Visitors wearing shorts or sleeveless tops are given a traditional Balinese/Javanese batik sarong to tie around the waist at the entrance gate.
