According to the Shakti Peetha lore, the right toes of Goddess Sati fell at Kalighat when Lord Vishnu severed her body. Historically situated on the banks of the Adi Ganga (a canal connecting to the Hooghly River), this site has been a epicenter of Shakta tantra and Kalikula worship for centuries.
