Deoghar, Jharkhand Ninth Jyotirlinga (Kamana Linga / Wish-Fulfilling Shrine) Maa Jaya Durga

Begin with reverence—let the deity’s presence settle before you read on.

01

Theological significance

The demon king Ravana performed severe penance, offering his ten heads to Shiva. Pleased, Lord Shiva healed Ravana's wounds like a divine physician ('Vaidya') and granted him a Swayambhu Lingam to carry to Lanka, warning that if placed on the ground en route, it would fix itself permanently. Lord Ganesha tricked Ravana into placing it here at Deoghar.

The sanctum

A 72-foot stone temple topped with golden pitchers. Uniquely, red silk ribbons physically link the spire of the main Shiva temple to the adjacent Parvati temple, symbolizing divine marital union.

A pilgrimage is fulfilled not only by reaching the shrine, but by arriving inwardly— with gratitude, patience, and a quiet mind.
