Day 11

Ekadashi (Eleventh Day)

Ekadashi is deeply sacred in Sanatana Dharma. When it falls in Pitru Paksha, it bridges deep spiritual purification with ancestral remembrance. Performing rituals today helps dissolve heavy karmic debts and brings divine grace to departed souls striving for higher spiritual planes.

Special remembrance

Ancestors who practiced deep spiritual discipline, devotion, or lived a life of quiet sacrifice during their time on earth.

Mantra

ॐ पितृभ्यो देवभ्यो महायोगिभ्य एव च। नमः स्वाहायै स्वधायै नित्यमेव नमो नमः॥

Om Pitrabhyo Devabhyo Mahayogibhy एव cha / Namah Swahayai Swadhayai Nityameva Namo Namah

Salutations to the ancestors, to the divine beings, to the great yogis, and continuous bows to Swaha and Swadha.

Self-serve ritual steps

  1. Maintain complete mental purity; many observe a partial fast (vrat) dedicated to inner cleansing.
  2. During Tarpan, recite the sacred ancestor mantra while slowly trickling water over your right thumb.
  3. Offer pure vegetarian preparations without onion or garlic, sharing portions respectfully with cows and crows.

Ekadashi to Sarvapitri Amavasya (Mahalaya)

Namaste. Welcome to the final and most powerful leg of Pitru Paksha—spanning from Ekadashi to Sarvapitri Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya. As a family priest, I always tell people that these concluding days hold immense spiritual weight. Whether someone passed away under sudden circumstances, on an unknown date, or during full/new moon junctions, these final days ensure every single soul in our ancestral lineage receives peace, water, and nourishment. Let us look closely at these final days, complete with their sacred Sanskrit mantras and transliterations.
