Granthi Bhedana: Piercing the Three Psychic Knots

Brahma, Vishnu & Rudra Granthis — safety valves on the path of Kundalini

01

Introduction

In Tantric and Hatha Yoga philosophy, Granthis (Sanskrit for “knots” or “ties”) are psychic and energetic blockages located along the central channel (Sushumna Nadi). While the Chakras are energy centers that process and transform vitality, the Granthis act as heavy spiritual locks or safety valves. They anchor human consciousness into the lower states of dualistic existence—attachment to material survival, personal identity, and intellectual ego. For Kundalini Shakti to ascend from the base of the spine (Muladhara) to the crown (Sahasrara), these three major knots must be systematically pierced (Granthi Bhedana).

02

The Three Granthis: Breakdown & Locations

Each Granthi is associated with a specific deity of the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti), reflecting the level of cosmic creation, preservation, or dissolution that the practitioner must transcend.

How Bandhas & Pranayama Pierce the Knots (Granthi Bhedana)

The Granthis cannot be dissolved through mere intellectual understanding; they require intense subtle pressure generated through physical postures (Asanas), breath retention (Kumbhaka), and energy locks (Bandhas).
