Bandhas & Pranayama: The Pressure System of Kundalini

How breath retention and energy locks drive Prana into Sushumna

01

Introduction

In classical Tantric Hatha traditions—as outlined in foundational texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita—Pranayama (breath control) and Bandhas (energy locks) function as a dynamic pressure system. Pranayama generates and charges subtle vitality (Prana), while Bandhas redirect, seal, and compress that energy, forcing it out of the side channels (Ida and Pingala) and driving it upward through the central column (Sushumna Nadi) to awaken Kundalini.

02

The Core Bandhas (Energy Locks)

The word Bandha means to “bind,” “hold,” or “lock.” Physical muscular contractions alter intra-abdominal and intra-thoracic pressure, directing vital forces (Prana Vayu and Apana Vayu) toward each other.

मूल बंध

Mula Bandha (The Root Lock)

Physical technique

Contraction of the perineum (in men, between the anus and scrotum; in women, the cervix). It is a subtle upward lift rather than a harsh squeeze.

Energetic function

Normally, Apana Vayu (downward-flowing energy) escapes through the base of the body. Mula Bandha seals the floor, turning Apana upward toward the navel.

Role in Kundalini

Compresses Apana against Prana, generating internal energetic friction (Tapas) at the root chakra (Muladhara) to rouse the sleeping serpent.

Key Pranayama Techniques in Classical Kundalini Practice

Pranayama in Tantra goes beyond basic deep breathing; it centers heavily around Kumbhaka (breath retention), which acts as the primary catalyst for energy manipulation.

नाड़ी शोधन

Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing with Retention)

Mechanism

Inhaling through the left nostril (Ida), retaining the breath with Bandhas, exhaling through the right (Pingala), and reversing.

Tantric purpose

Cleanses the 72,000 Nadis (energy channels). Kundalini cannot enter Sushumna if Ida and Pingala are imbalanced or congested.

How Bandhas and Pranayama Work Together

The synthesis of these tools follows a precise mechanics sequence during practice.

Gentle alternate nostril breathing balances the lunar (Ida) and solar (Pingala) currents, ensuring brain hemisphere synchronization and preparing the central channel.
