Saints & Devotees

Sant Tukaram's Abhangs by the River

Characters: Sant Tukaram, Vitthala, Villagers of Dehu

Sant Tukaram composed abhangs—devotional poems in Marathi—that spoke about Vitthala, compassion, and honest living. A traditional account says that critics dismissed his work and pressured him to place his handwritten poems in the Indrayani River. Heartbroken, Tukaram sat near the river in prayer, but he did not answer cruelty with cruelty. The devotional tradition remembers that the manuscripts later returned unharmed. Whether children hear this as a miracle of faith or as a symbol of poetry that could not be erased, the lesson is steady: meaningful work may be criticized, but we can listen carefully, improve honestly, and continue without surrendering our purpose.
