The dark, deep waters of the Yamuna river near Vrindavan had become toxic and dangerous because a terrifying, venomous multi-headed serpent named Kaliya lived there, boiling the water with his poison and frightening everyone. The villagers were terrified to go near the river. Little Krishna bravely climbed up a high riverside tree, leaped straight into the bubbling toxic water, and confronted the proud serpent. Instead of destroying Kaliya with divine weapons, Krishna danced lightly and playfully on the serpent's hoods until Kaliya's pride and poison were exhausted. When Kaliya surrendered and asked for mercy, Krishna forgave him, banishing him away from the village to live peacefully elsewhere. Krishna showed that true strength transforms and reforms rather than simply destroying.
