Saints & Devotees

Kanakadasa and Krishna's Window

Characters: Kanakadasa, Lord Krishna, Temple Community

Kanakadasa was a poet and devotee who sang lovingly to Krishna. A traditional account says that, because of the social rules of his time, he was not allowed to enter a temple in Udupi. Instead of answering exclusion with anger, Kanakadasa stood outside and continued singing from his heart. Tradition remembers that the image of Krishna turned toward the wall and a small opening appeared, allowing Kanakadasa to receive darshan from outside. That opening became known as Kanakana Kindi—Kanaka's window. The story reminds listeners that devotion and human dignity cannot be measured by birth, status, or the doorway someone is permitted to use.
