Phalguna Purnima: cosmic renewal, Bhakti overcoming ego, and the Rasa of divine love

The Triumph of Bhakti: Prahlada, Holika, and Lord Narasimha

Vishnu Purana · Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 7

The story

The demonic king Hiranyakashipu demanded that the universe worship him alone as God. His young son Prahlada remained an unshakeable devotee of Lord Vishnu. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu instructed his sister Holika to sit in a blazing fire while holding Prahlada—Holika possessed a boon, a sacred garment that rendered her immune to fire. As the flames rose, Prahlada’s continuous chanting of Narayana generated a shield of grace: the fire-resistant shawl flew off Holika and draped Prahlada. Holika was reduced to ashes; Prahlada emerged untouched.

Esoteric symbolism

  • Holika Ahamkara (arrogance / ego) and the misuse of spiritual boons for evil ends.
  • Prahlada Pure Bhakti—childlike, uncorrupted devotion.
  • Holika Dahan On the eve of Holi, pyres burn inner vices—lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride—so the pure soul (Jiva) can shine forth.
  • Lord Narasimha Vishnu manifested as half-man, half-lion to slay Hiranyakashipu—proving the Divine transcends all dualities to protect the righteous.

Vedic & seasonal origins: the spring rebirth

Long before Puranic narratives took form, Phalguna Purnima held immense significance in Vedic agricultural and cosmic calendars.

Vasantotsava

The spring festival honoring Vasant Ritu, mentioned in texts such as the Kama Sutra, Ratnavali of King Harsha, and various Grihya Sutras—vitality, blossoming flowers, and fertility.

Agrayana Ishti

Offering newly harvested winter crops—wheat, barley, gram—into sacred fire. Parched grains (Holaka) became Prasad. The word Holi itself is linguistically linked to Holaka.

Ritu-Sandhi health

The winter-to-spring transition can aggravate Kapha. Historically Gulal was made from turmeric, neem, hibiscus, Palash, and sandalwood—a herbal cleansing for the body as seasons shift.
