Goddess Durga / Mahishasuramardini
The supreme embodiment of cosmic power (Shakti) who vanquished the buffalo demon Mahishasura after a ten-day war.
September / October
Ashvin · Shukla Paksha Dashami (10th Waxing Lunar Day) · Sharad Ritu (Autumn Equinox Transition)
Concludes the nine sacred nights of Navratri. The moon enters its bright waxing 10th phase in Ashvin, creating a cosmic window of victorious momentum (Shravana Nakshatra alignment) where cosmic order (Dharma) overcomes entropic chaos (Adharma).
The supreme embodiment of cosmic power (Shakti) who vanquished the buffalo demon Mahishasura after a ten-day war.
The Seventh Avatar of Vishnu (Maryada Purushottama) who vanquished the ten-headed demon king Ravana in Lanka.
The divine source of knowledge, learning, and arts invoked during Vidyarambham.
The sacred cosmic tree associated with the Pandavas hiding their celestial weapons and granting victory (*Vijaya*).
Dussehra is derived from 'Dasha-Hara' (removal of the ten). The ten heads of Ravana represent the ten senses—five organs of action (Karmendriyas) and five organs of perception (Jnanendriyas)—when controlled by the unbridled ego. Vijayadashami signifies the triumph of Atman (pure awareness, Lord Rama) over the ten-headed sensory ego.
Vijayadashami represents the complete harmony of dynamic cosmic action (Shakti) guided by unyielding righteousness (Dharma/Purusha), establishing inner self-sovereignty (*Swarajya*).
The destruction of Ravana signifies the systematic annihilation of ten inner mental afflictions: Kama (Lust), Krodha (Anger), Lobha (Greed), Moha (Delusion), Mada (Pride), Matsarya (Jealousy), Manas (Intellectual Arrogance), Buddhi (Misused Intellect), Chitta (Willful Attachment), and Ahamkara (Egoism).
Goddess Durga slays Mahishasura on the 10th day after 9 nights of intense cosmic warfare, symbolizing the complete eradication of stubborn animal instincts.
Lord Rama performs Chandi Puja to invoke Goddess Durga's blessings and slays Ravana on Dashami, proving that righteousness triumphs over immense material power.
The Pandavas retrieved their divine weapons from the hollow of a Shami tree on Vijayadashami after completing their one year of incognito exile (*Ajnatavasa*) to restore Dharma.
After 9 days of intense chakra awakening during Navratri, the energy on Vijayadashami stabilizes at the Sahasrara (Crown) and Ajna (Third Eye) chakras, granting victory over lower karmic propensities.
The weapons (*Astra/Shastra*) cleansed during Ayudha Puja symbolize the subtle tools of awareness—discrimination (*Viveka*), dispassion (*Vairagya*), and focus (*Ekagrata*)—used to pierce mental illusions.
Recognizing the internal 'Ravana' (ego) and 'Mahishasura' (ignorance) operating behind daily thoughts.
Incinerating bad habits and negative karmic traits during the symbolic Ravana Dahan.
Sanctifying tools, books, and work during Ayudha Puja, realizing every action is worship (*Yajna*).
Abiding in uninterrupted Self-awareness, achieving supreme victory (*Vijayadashami*) over birth and death.
