01

Theological significance

Originally worshipped as Lord Neela Madhava by tribal chief Biswavasu, King Indradyumna commissioned Vishwakarma to carve the wooden deities from a sacred floating log (Daruk Brahma). Lord Jagannath, along with brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, represents the supreme unmanifest consciousness in accessible wooden forms.

The sanctum

A 65-meter Kalinga-style stone spire topped with the Neela Chakra (Eight-metal wheel). The Ratnavedi (jeweled throne) inside the inner sanctum enshrines large neem-wood idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra featuring large round eyes and symbolic shortened hands.

A pilgrimage is fulfilled not only by reaching the shrine, but by arriving inwardly— with gratitude, patience, and a quiet mind.
