King Shibi was renowned across the land for his strict adherence to justice, honor, and profound compassion for all living creatures. One afternoon, while sitting in his royal courtyard, a terrified little white dove fluttered into his lap, trembling and crying, 'Protect me, O King! A fierce hawk is hunting me down for food!' Moments later, a sharp-taloned hawk landed nearby and demanded, 'That bird is my rightful meal! If you protect it, you starve me and my family. Where is your justice?' King Shibi faced an ethical dilemma. Bound by honor, he could not let the dove be killed, but he also couldn't let the hawk starve. With extraordinary selflessness, Shibi offered a compromise: 'Take flesh from my own body equal to the weight of the dove.' He stepped onto a scale, placing the dove on one side and cutting slices of his own flesh for the other. Impressed by his ultimate sacrifice, the gods revealed themselves, praising his boundless compassion.
