Epics (Mahabharata)

Savitri and Satyavan

Characters: Princess Savitri, Satyavan, Lord Yama

Princess Savitri was a woman of exceptional intelligence, eloquence, and unshakeable willpower. She chose to marry Prince Satyavan, even though a prophecy foretold that he had only one year left to live. When that fateful day arrived and Lord Yama, the God of Death, came to take Satyavan's soul, Savitri did not collapse in tears. Instead, she stood up, wiped her tears, and respectfully followed Yama step-for-step into the dark forest. Impressed by her fearless loyalty, Yama repeatedly offered her any wish she wanted—except her husband's life. Savitri used her brilliant speech and wisdom to frame clever wishes (such as asking for peace for her in-laws and a prosperous future for her own lineage), which logically trapped Yama into having to grant her husband's life back! Yama smiled, deeply admiring her sharp intellect and devotion, and restored Satyavan.
