Chapter 1

Origin of the Vrat (Naimisharanya Dialogue)

In the sacred forest of Naimisharanya, 88,000 sages led by Sage Saunaka asked Maharishi Suta: 'By what simple vow or prayer can humanity overcome suffering in Kali Yuga and achieve peace?' Sage Suta replied that Narada Muni once asked the same question to Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha. Lord Vishnu revealed the Satyanarayan Vrat—a simple ritual observing truth, offering sweets, fruits, and panchamrit, and sharing the Prasad with all without distinction of caste or status.
