The midnight birth of the flute-bearing avatar, illuminating hearts with love, joy, and supreme wisdom.
Gokulashtami · Janmashtami · Sri Krishna Jayanti · Dahi Handi
Janmashtami marks the appearance of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, born at midnight in a Mathura prison to vanquish wickedness and establish Dharma. The celebration features fasting, midnight abhishekam of baby Krishna, and spirited human pyramids for the Dahi Handi game.
Deities: Lord Sri Krishna (Balagopala), Devaki and Vasudeva, Yashoda and Nanda Baba
Prophesied to overthrow the tyrannical king Kamsa, Krishna took birth at the stroke of midnight during a raging thunderstorm. Miraculously, prison iron chains snapped open, guards fell asleep, and his father Vasudeva safely ferried the infant across the roaring Yamuna river inside a wicker basket under the hood of Sheshanaga to the safety of Gokul.
Divine joy (Ananda), detachment without renunciation of action, and pure surrender (Bhakti) to the eternal supreme friend.
Devotees observe a nirjala or phalahar fast throughout the day. At midnight, the small idol of Laddu Gopal is given a ritual panchamrita abhishekam, dressed in bright pitambari silks, placed in a cradle, and gently swung while chanting the Maha-Mantra.

Janmotsav & Raasleela
Temples across Krishna's birth land stage traditional Raasleela dance dramas, with midnight chimes, blowing of conches, and showers of fragrant flowers across thousands of shrines.
They symbolize welcoming the divine infant Krishna into the house, imagining him playfully tiptoeing into the home shrine with butter on his hands.
Because devotees observe strict grain-free fasting on Janmashtami, roasted and spiced coriander seed powder serves as an auspicious, digestive, and grain-free prasad.
