Ahoi Ashtami is an austere dawn-to-dusk fast observed primarily by mothers in North India. Dedicated to Goddess Ahoi (an aspect of Devi Parvati), mothers fast without food or water until the appearance of stars or the moon, praying for the protection and well-being of their children.

Tradition tells of a devoted mother of seven sons who accidentally killed a porcupine's young while digging soil in a forest, inadvertently drawing an ancestral curse that claimed her children. Consumed with remorse, she underwent rigorous repentance, serving cows and fasting for Goddess Ahoi, who was moved by her devotion and restored all seven sons to life.
