Bhaishajya & Raksha-Tattva: The Sacred Healing Arts and Psychosomatic Immunity

Kanda 1 opens with invocations to Vachaspati (Lord of Speech) and the Apah (cosmic waters). In Vedic medicine (Ayurveda), health (Arogya) is the balanced integration of mind, vital breath, and bodily humors, grounded in universal Rta.

Recited during Santikarma and Bhaishajya rites. Oblations offered with protective herbs (Apamarga, Pippali) into the Shantikagni to neutralize physical and psychological ailments.

Mantra 1

Devatā: Vachaspati · Ṛṣi: Atharvan

ये त्रिषप्ताः परियन्ति विश्वा रूपाणि बिभ्रतः । वाचस्पतिर्बला तेषां तन्वो अद्य दधातु मे ॥

Ye triṣaptāḥ pariyanti viśvā rūpāṇi bibhrataḥ. Vācaspatirbalā teṣāṁ tanvo adya dadhātu me.

The hymn invokes Vachaspati and the 'Tri-sapta' (the 21 principles of cosmic manifestation/categories). Speech (Vak) is the vehicle of conscious creation.

Chanted at the initiation of Vedic study (Upanayana/Brahmayajna) to invoke intellect, retentive memory (Medha), and vocal mastery.

Mantra 2

Devatā: Parjanya & Apas · Ṛṣi: Atharvan

विद्मा शरस्य पितरं पर्जन्यं भूरिधायसम् । विद्मो ष्वस्य मातरं पृथिवीं भूरिवर्षसम् ॥

Vidmā śarasya pitaraṁ parjanyaṁ bhūridhāyasam. Vidmo ṣvasya mātaraṁ pṛthivīṁ bhūrivarṣasam.

Parjanya (the rain-giver) and Prithvi (Earth) represent the cosmic generative polarity providing nourishment and natural pharmacopoeia.

Employed in Shantikarma and healing rites using the reed (shara) or herbal balms to staunch bleeding and cure fever.
